Constant DDoS Attacks Against Volunteer Internet Organizations Threaten Online Freedom and Security FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA Prolexic Technologies, a leading provider of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) solutions, is providing free ongoing DDoS mitigation services to SURBL and URIBL, industry-leading anti-spam sites who have been under a series of DDoS attacks during the past several weeks. Prolexic has enabled the sites to continue operation despite the repeated and on-going assault on their web operations by DDoS agents. SURBL (www.surbl.org) and URIBL (www.uribl.com) are Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) blacklist services that allow filters to efficiently identify unsolicited messages based on the web sites advertised within the email. Both organizations offer free public Domain Name System (DNS) interfaces for easy integration with existing anti-spam software. "Our effort is very much community driven," said Dallas Engelken, URIBL. "Without a web presence, we lose a valuable source of user feedback. We greatly value the contribution Prolexic is making to organizations like ours, so that we may continue to service our users and improve their email experience." Prolexic attributes the SURBL and URIBL attacks to the Storm Botnet, which includes over one million PCs and is used mainly to send spam or provide fast-flux web/DNS hosting for stock scams, as well as compromised Linux machines. Currently, the FBI is seeking to identify the infected systems under its newly announced Operation Bot Roast. "These latest attacks on anti-spam sites are yet another indication of the extent to which criminals will go to prohibit a free and safe Internet for the general public," said Darren Rennick, Prolexic CEO. "We are seeing incidents of DDoS being used for cyber-censorship and cyber-terrorism activities in increasing frequency around the world. At Prolexic, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to help non-profit organizations whose services benefit all Internet users. We hope our industry associates in the DDoS mitigation marketplace share this sentiment, and we are investigating their desire to join forces to protect the good guys of the Internet." "Prolexic came through for us when we really needed help", said Jeff Chan of SURBL. "Their technology is pretty slick."
